SIPOC was originally used within the scope of Total Quality Management Systems in the 1980s however now it largely exists as a relatively well used Lean tool in 6Sigma and Lean manufacturing circles.

The methodology of SIPOC is that every process has both an input and an output. In a series or sequence of processes, processes that feed into each other, the outputs of one process should be aligned to the inputs of the follow-on process. If the inputs are not aligned to the outputs of the preceding process it is highly likely there will be a cause for concern. (SIPOC is a tool that can be used in conjunction with a Value Stream Map as obviously one area will naturally feed into another).

A SIPOC Diagram or Chart is a mapping tool that is used by a team or group to support the identification of all the relevant elements that are likely  to affect a particular process.
